Initial Situation

There are about 65,000 homeless people* in Berlin, 7,000 of whom live on the streets. About half of the homeless people in Berlin are EU citizens, mainly from Central, South-Eastern and Eastern European countries. Homelessness or houseless people (also invisible) increasingly affects foreigners. The reasons for this are: language barriers, lack of knowledge about the offers of the support systems, about possible social benefits and of their own rights.

This is where Zuhause in Berlin (ZiB) comes in. The project is aimed at homeless EU citizens or at risk of homelessness, as well as their children under the age of 18 who are newly arrived or already living in Germany.

This project is carried out in cooperation with the districts of Reinickendorf and Tempelhof-Schöneberg as well as the Berlin Senate Department for Integration, Labour and Social Services in these Berlin districts.

Intentions of the project:

The objective of ZiB is to sustainably improve and stabilize the living conditions of mainly: homelessness migrants or at risk to lose their home, to collaborate in their social and community participation. In addition to short-term support measures will be offered to integrate those affected into society on a permanent basis.

Implementation approach:

ZiB offers individual and group counselling in different languages to the affected people, as well as accompaniment, orientation to other offers and services, such as employment centres or job centres and housing assistance.

Apart from that, ZiB offers workshops to fight against discrimination and cooperates with private organizations and institutions involved in this area.
